Report: Jets exploring trade market to acquire star WR for QB Aaron Rodgers

After the New York Jets failed to add a dependable wide receiver in the first wave of free agency, exploring the trade market is a smart idea.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Jets general manager Joe Douglas was interested in Jerry Jeudy (Cleveland Browns) and Keenan Allen (Chicago Bears) before they were traded. Now, he could turn his sights to Tee Higgins (Cincinnati Bengals) or Brandon Aiyuk (San Francisco 49ers).

Report: Jets exploring trade market to acquire star WR

Higgins, 25, recently requested a trade after the Bengals franchise tagged him. Aiyuk, 26, is entering the final year of a four-year, $12.53M deal. However, Cimini added, “There’s no concrete evidence to suggest either one is available.”

If the Jets acquired Higgins or Aiyuk in a trade, they would probably have to sign them to a multiyear extension, creating a potential roadblock. Spotrac estimates they have $22.13M in cap space, 14th in the NFL. Aiyuk’s market value is a four-year deal worth $24M annually, while Higgins’ market value is a four-year deal worth $18.6M annually.

The Jets could pursue a cheaper free agent instead, perhaps former Pro Bowler Odell Beckham Jr. or former first-round pick Mike Williams.
Still, New York should try to clear cap room and land a star wideout.

Aside from 2022 Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, no Jets pass-catcher logged 1,000 or more receiving yards last season, and the team finished 30th in the league in passing yards (171.4).

Revamping the inept unit is paramount, especially with quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning from an Achilles injury. This could impact the four-time MVP’s ability to carry a team, meaning he needs more help.
