Could Broncos consider drastic move with Russell Wilson?

The Denver Broncos’ playoff chances took a big hit when they lost 26-23 to the New England Patriots on Sunday night. Denver is now 7-8 and has games against the Chargers and Raiders remaining. Now the team may need to start thinking about long-term questions.

News9 in Denver’s Mike Klis wrote on Monday that the Broncos may consider cutting Russell Wilson this offseason. Klis points out that if Wilson is on the Broncos’ roster on March 17, not only would Wilson be guaranteed $39 million in 2024, but the quarterback would also be guaranteed $37 million in 2025.

If Denver thinks that they can’t win long term with Wilson, they may want to swallow that tough pill in 2024 so that they can have more flexibility in 2025.

Wilson is in his second season with the Broncos and has improved significantly from his brutal 2022 season. He has passed for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdows and 8 interceptions, but he has still fallen short of what Denver has hoped for.

After a slow start to the season, Denver went on a 5-game winning streak to get back into the playoff race. But the Broncos acquired Wilson with the idea of winning the division and a Super Bowl in mind, not merely achieving a .500 record. They may recognize their mistake and look to move on from the 35-year-old QB.
