Today marks the first day in which NBA franchises can sign players to standard 10-day contracts (read all about this type of deal here), which count against team salary for cap and tax purposes and require an opening on the 15-man roster to complete, per HoopsRumors.

No starter-caliber player is available for those types of contracts, let alone willing to sign one in the first place. That’s why 10-day deals are usually reserved for subpar players and teams having bad seasons and digging for gems hidden in the deep depths of the G League ocean. Another type of player usually signed to a 10-day contract is the mythological maybe-washed-maybe-not veteran, mostly for instant-impact purposes amid an injury crisis or a sudden need for a particular role player.

The Knicks had a problem with their big man rotation following the injuries sustained by starting center Mitchell Robinson and backup-five Jericho Sims, although they already addressed that issue by signing veteran Taj Gibson and then trading for Precious Achiuwa.

Another problem has emerged of late, however, related to that aforementioned trade: the Knicks’ second unit cannot hit a bucket to save their collective life.

According to HoopsRumors, the Knicks are currently filled to the brim with 15 men on their official roster, thus having no room for any additional player to join the NBA squad. On top of that, New York already has three players on two-way deals after the recent addition of Duane Washington Jr. They would need to waive someone in order to create space for a newcomer.

Could—should—they do so for in-house solution Brandon Goodwin of the Westchester Knicks in an attempt to bolster their rotation? Could Goodwin be the microwave scorer New York needs and a cheap, available, and affordable option to boost the second unit and help the team off the pine?

A member of the Westchester Knicks squad that went on to win the G League Showcase last December, Goodwin should at least be given a look, or five, as a potential off-the-bench heater for the NYK.

Goodwin is coming off averaging 24.7 PPG, 5 RPG, 9.2 APG, and 1.7 SPG in the 2023 Showcase tourney. He helped the Knicks (no. 2 seed) upset the Mad Ants (no. 1) in the final, ending in a 107-99 victory for Westchester.

BG is closer to the veteran rather than the prospect type of player. He’s already 28, and he’s been plying his trade at both the G League (71 games) and the NBA (133) since he entered the pro circuit back in the summer of 2018 after going undrafted.

When in the NBA with the Nuggets (2019), the Hawks (2020-21), and lastly the Cavs (2022), Goodwin has career averages close to a 5-2-1 per-game line playing around 12 MPG. Not great!

But.

If the Knicks don’t want to pull off another trade or simply can’t find a proper/better option out there than what they currently have in tow quickley (pun intended), then giving Goodwin a shot might be a sound option if only to see if he has something inside of him when used against NBA-caliber talent.

Of course, the Knicks still have recently acquired Malachi Flynn sitting on the wings and waiting to make his official debut in Orange and Blue as he’s still trying to come back from a little injury that has made it impossible for him to dress for a game since arriving in Manhattan last weekend.

Flynn is questionable to play on Friday against the Sixers in Philly, but he’s inching closer to appearing in a game once and for all. That being said, Flynn is not what you’d call a heater, nor is Goodwin the ultimate offensive weapon all things considered.

We’re talking scraps and ancillary pieces here, folks, but for a 10-day deal, perhaps a chance if only to see what’s up is not the craziest of ideas.
