Chicago Cubs Officially Make First Addition to Major League Roster

After a long wait, the Chicago Cubs added their first player to their MLB roster this offseason.

Much of the conversation about the Chicago Cubs this offseason is surrounding their lack of aggression, resulting in zero additions to their Major League roster, becoming the last team who had yet to do so.

That is until the Cubs officially announced they made their first addition to their 40-man roster after they claimed catcher Brian Serven off of waivers.

And while it’s certainly something, this likely isn’t going to put to bed the uneasiness of what Chicago has yet to accomplish this offseason.

Serven was a fifth round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2016 MLB Draft, but was never considered one of their top prospects after failing to crack the organization’s Top-30 according to MLB Pipeline.

However, he continued to rise through their farm system until he made his Major League debut in 2022.

During that season, he recorded a slash line of .203/.261/.332 with six homers and 16 RBI across 62 games. Last year was much for difficult for Serven as he only appeared in 11 games and struggled at the plate.

After the Rockies signed Jacob Stallings to a contract this offseason, they dropped Serven, allowing the Cubs to swoop in and claim him off of waivers.

The 28-year-old was added to Chicago’s 40-man roster immediately as the 38th man. They didn’t have to make additional moves to make room for him. Serven is also the third catcher they’ve added this offseason as Jorge Alfaro and Joe Hudson were signed to minor league deals.

Again, this won’t be a move that eases the worries Cubs fans have.

Sitting in the early part of January, they have yet to make a major move, but at least they officially have added a player to their Major League roster.
