James’ performance was stellar, accumulating 36 points, a career-high 20 rebounds, and 12 assists. His prowess was on full display as he clinched the win with crucial free throws in the final seconds. James expressed his excitement about competing against Curry, one of the game’s greatest, and looked forward to sharing these moments with his grandchildren.
“It’s something I’ll be able to talk about with my grandkids, talk about me being able to compete with one of the greatest players to ever play the game,” James said. “So hopefully, I can be cool with my grandkids at that point, for sure.”
Curry, not to be outdone, dazzled with his agility and sharpshooting. He extended the game into overtime with a dynamic layup and continued to shine in the second overtime, scoring a significant 3-pointer over Anthony Davis.
The game showcased enduring talent, with Curry acknowledging the rarity of such high-level play from athletes in their 15th and 21st years, respectively. He expressed admiration for their sustained excellence in the NBA.
“Every year we get to do this, the back-and-forth battles, all the Finals runs, to the playoffs last year, after the horn sounded tonight, there was a little laugh of we can’t like imagine a scenario where a game like tonight happens, his year, what, 21, and my year 15,” Curry said. “All the other guys in the league who have been doing it 15-plus years, KD (Kevin Durant), CP (Chris Paul), it’s insane.
“You look forward to the battles, but you also appreciate the mutual respect of what it takes to keep doing what you’re doing at this level because only a few people know how hard it is. I’m happy to be in that group.”
Lakers coach Darvin Ham was amazed by the display of skill from both legends. He emphasized the game’s significance, highlighting his team’s intense competition and unity.
“Just trying to control myself first and foremost as a basketball fan,” Ham said. “They should be real happy in New York, this was a hell of a basketball game, a high-level basketball game. Two legends going back and forth, two great organizations. It was fun to be a part of. It’s just one of those wins where it showed our character. Our group is really coming together.”
Curry finished with an impressive 46 points, including a season-high nine 3-pointers. His late 3-pointer in the second overtime almost secured the win for the Warriors.
D’Angelo Russell made significant contributions for the Lakers, scoring critical 3-pointers in the game’s intense moments, totaling 28 points. James, dominating in the overtime periods, registered his third triple-double of the season and the 110th of his illustrious career. Davis added 29 points and 13 rebounds, contributing to the Lakers’ narrow win.
The Warriors’ Klay Thompson tied the game in the first overtime and continued to score late in the second, although he eventually fouled out.
An injury scare for Davis in the third quarter added to the drama, but he returned to contribute significantly, especially in the final moments of regulation.
The Lakers and Warriors, both teams with star-studded rosters, reprised their thrilling rivalry from last year’s Western Conference semifinals. Free throw disparity was a notable aspect, with the Lakers attempting significantly more than Golden State, a point Warriors coach Steve Kerr chose to refrain from commenting on despite the glaring difference.
“I might comment on the free throws that they shot, but my mom is here right now, and I want to be on my best behavior, so I’m not going to comment on their 43 free throws to our 16,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “I’m not going to comment on Steph shooting three free throws in 43 minutes.”
Curry’s performance marked another high-scoring game, continuing his streak of impressive scoring and 3-point shooting. James and Davis were formidable throughout the game, shooting efficiently and helping the Lakers edge out in rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Warriors achieved a season-high in points and 3-pointers, showcasing their offensive prowess. The game was a second consecutive heartbreaker for the Warriors, following a close loss to Sacramento. Jonathan Kuminga continued his impressive form, scoring over 20 points for the sixth consecutive game.
