The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl Champions. Their victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII made them the first team to win the Big Game in consecutive season since the Tom Brady led New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004. Next, they look to become the first team to win three-consecutive NFL Championships since the 1965-67 Green Bay Packers.
In order to become just the second franchise ever to win three-straight titles (the Packers have done it on two different occasions), the Chiefs need to revamp their offense. While Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are an elite duo, the rest of the team’s pass catchers were, overall, inconsistent at best.
The Kansas City Chiefs Need to Address the Wide Receiver Position
Kelce led the Chiefs in receiving yards in 2023 with 984 yards. Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice was not far behind him with 938 yards (and seven touchdowns). However, no other Kansas City pass catcher had more than 460 yards (Justin Watson).
Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who is making $10 million a year, only had 315 receiving yards. Skyy Moore had 244, the exact same total as running back Isiah Pacheco. And let’s not even talk about Kadarious Toney (169 yards).
Fortunately for the Chiefs, the NFL salary cap just went up by $30 million. Restructuring Mahomes’ contract and cutting MVS can save them an additional $70 million on the 2024 salary cap. That is a lot of money to work with, and one former NFL wide receiver believes the Chiefs will use it to give Mahomes another stud pass catcher.
Former NFL Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall Predicts the Kansas City Chiefs Will Sign Free Agent Mike Evans
Brandon Marshall was a six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who played for the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, and Seattle Seahawks during his career. Now the host of the podcast I Am Athlete, Marshall gave a few bold predictions of where five big names on the free agent market would sign.
He predicted that the Chiefs would sign free agent wide receiver Mike Evans:
Brandon Marshall’s Top 5 off-season predictions:
1. Mike Evans to the Chiefs
2. Stefon Diggs to the Giants
3. Saquon Barkley stays with the Giants
4. Kirk Cousins to the Broncos
5. Russell Wilson to the Falcons pic.twitter.com/z4hWb3MbKh— I AM ATHLETE (@IAMATHLETEpod) February 22, 2024
Evans, a ten-year NFL veteran, has played his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also has never had a season with fewer than 1,000 yards. Additionally, he led the league in touchdown receptions last season (13).
The biggest question, though, is if Evans wants to leave Tampa Bay. If he does, he is surely going to have more than his fair share of suitors recruiting him to their team. However, as mentioned, the Chiefs have the ability to open up a ton of cap space with just a few simple roster moves.
And they give Evans the opportunity to play with one of the best quarterbacks of all time and arguably the best shot he has at another Super Bowl.
