Why passing on Caleb Williams with the No.1 pick is too risky for the Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are in line for the first pick in the upcoming draft, and the overwhelming favorite to go first is star USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

Whether or not to select him with that pick has been a discussion for quite some time. Justin Fields didn’t have the success he or the Bears would’ve wanted in his first three seasons. The blame can be placed on a variety of shortcomings. The lack of weapons in the offense, trust issues between Fields and Bears staff, or the struggles on the defensive side of the ball. The point is the Field’s era has provided little optimism for the Bear’s future.

The Bears need a franchise quarterback, and Caleb Williams fits the description. Chris Simms recently defended his claim that Caleb Williams should be the number-one pick and that Williams is one of the best QBs he’s ever evaluated. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner threw 33 touchdowns and rushed for 11 last season. He has a natural feel for the pocket and can flat-out sling it.

Chicago’s fanbase seems like it’s been waiting forever for a superstar-level Quarterback to get behind, and they’ve been unable to find the formula. With the 2025 draft class having a much scarcer selection of Quarterback talent, now is the time to go all in with a player as talented as Caleb Williams.Ezoic

It’s crucial for the Bears to find their future quarterback and set himself and the team up for success by building a winning team around him.

The Bears have set themselves up well this draft by acquiring not one but two top ten picks including the first and ninth overall picks. It just so happens that the top-ranked tight end in the draft Brock Bowers, is projected to go right around the top ten. While the Bears have a decent tight end in Cole Kemet, Brock Bowers has a much higher ceiling and more raw talent and has too much potential to ignore.

They also could decide to trade the pick and try to get more capital by trading the pick. Finding an edge rusher should be a high priority for Chicago. They could acquire one by trading their second first-round pick, or they may trade back and find their guy later in the draft.
