Breakout Season Sends Third Jets’ Defender to Pro Bowl Games

New York Jets’ edge rusher Jermaine Johnson walked the walk in Year 2.

After playing a minimal role as a rookie, the 2022 first-round draft pick is heading to the Pro Bowl Games on the heels of a breakout 2023 campaign. The NFL announced Johnson as a replacement for Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive end Khalil Mack, who will not participate in Orlando.

Breakout Season Sends Third Jets' Defender to Pro Bowl Games

The 25-year-old Johnson is set to join two Jets’ teammates as Pro Bowl Games participants. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and cornerback Sauce Gardner were announced as initial selections four weeks ago.

With Johnson’s notable contributions, the New York defense ranked first overall in yards per play allowed (4.57) and sack percentage (9.20%).

“He’s bigger, stronger, faster. That young guy right there took the initiative this offseason to get way better. I for sure know he’s going to have a breakout year,” said Williams about Johnson last July.

Johnson’s significant increase in playing time translated into a significant increase in production. Leading all Jets’ defensive ends in snap count (748), the second-year pro recorded 7.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits. He started all 17 games and also accounted for seven passes defensed.

As a rookie, Johnson logged 2.5 sacks and 312 defensive snaps over 14 games.

“I didn’t see the Jermaine I know on film last year to be quite honest,” said Johnson prior to the start of his second NFL season.

After the Pro Bowl selection became official, Johnson posted a reaction on the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
