Chelsea have joined the race for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong and now face competition for his signature from a couple of big clubs.
That is according to a report from depor.
That Spanish outlet claims that Chelsea have decided to throw their hat into the ring for Jeremie Frimpong’s signature and have actually made him a priority target ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Signing the 22-year-old may not be easy, though.
Depor’s report also states that Liverpool are interested and that Xabi Alonso wants him at Real Madrid if the Spain legend succeeds Carlo Ancelotti as manager at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Do Chelsea need Jeremie Frimpong?
Signing another right-back really does not need to be at the top of Chelsea’s agenda, at least for now.
Mauricio Pochettino currently has Reece James at his disposal, one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.
The England international showed that last time out against Manchester City, where he made five tackles in the first half of the game, one fewer than the entire City team managed.
Frimpong is never going to start ahead of James when the 23-year-old is fit.
MORE CHELSEA STORIES
There is Malo Gusto as well, who was signed in January but only arrived at Stamford Bridge during the summer. The Frenchman can cover James when he is out, while Marc Cucurella is a more unorthodox option. Both players have filled in for their captain this season.
All in all, we see no reason for Chelsea to sign Frimpong or another right-back. If James continues to pick up injuries, then that is another story.
But the Chelsea skipper is now back from his hamstring injury and looked really good in his last couple of Premier League appearances. If he can stay fit, then the Blues can forget about Frimpong or anyone else for that matter. They will not find a better right-back than James.
