Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shows utmost respect for Caitlin Clark with clever one-liner

Even Patrick Mahomes has noticed the incredible talent of one key college basketball player. So, when he was asked about her during his media availability before Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had the perfect response.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark is only 66 points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in women’s college basketball, and Mahomes was asked about her accomplishments.

“Just a tremendous player, a tremendous person from every time I’ve met with her and talked,” Mahomes said. “You can tell she loves the game. She loves playing at Iowa. And she’s going to be one of the best college basketball players to every play, and then go to the WNBA and dominate there.”

And while the two-time Super Bowl champion doesn’t usually back down from the challenge, he doesn’t want to have to go up against Clark.

“Hopefully I never have to play her one-on-one, because she’ll for sure be getting buckets on me,” Mahomes said with a smile.

And that message is something Chiefs general manager Brett Veach will love to hear.

In 2019, a video went viral showing Mahomes playing a pickup basketball game at an Overland Park recreation center. And the quarterback was clearly into the game, not willing to take it easy. That made many very nervous, with Mahomes risking injury.

So Veach was not a fan of his star quarterback going that hard during games.

“Before we start, I do want to address something that I know everyone is concerned and asking about,” Veach said in 2019. “Yes, I did see the tweet of Patrick Mahomes playing basketball. We did address it, and as soon as I saw it probably took me two seconds to call his agent and tell him that was a big no-no. The Kingdom can rest assured that we have that under control. No more basketball for Pat.”

However, the conversation was brought back up on Monday after Mahomes was asked to compare himself to a current NBA player.

“If I played basketball, I’d be just like Steph Curry,” he said. “I’ve got the shot. I just got to get a couple little extra reps, couple shots up, I’ll be shooting just like him. That’s who I’d be.”

But don’t worry. He’s not trading in his cleats for basketball shoes anytime soon.
