Eagles’ Recent Signee Says Seahawks Tried to Pursue Him

For the exception of a few small deals, the Seattle Seahawks have been relatively quiet once again in free agency, but not for a lack of trying.

According to star edge rusher Bryce Huff, who left the New York Jets this offseason to sign a lucrative three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Seahawks were one of several teams who showed interest in him.

“The Jets, of course. The Giants were on the table. Commanders were on the table. Vikings, Seahawks. It was a good bit of teams,” Huff said, per SI.com’s Eagles Today.

Huff, who turns 26 next month, was originally an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. He had developed into a solid role player for the Jets, but this season, he broke out for a career-high 10 sacks.

Still, he only played 42 percent of the Jets’ defensive snaps due to being somewhat of a liability in run defense. Considering that the Seahawks finished as one of the worst run defenses in the league last season, adding another player who struggles in that area might not have been the wisest decision.

Additionally, matching or exceeding the contract that the Eagles gave him (three years at just over $17 million annually) would’ve been a challenge. While the Seahawks had and still have a decent of cap space, they also spent a premium to retain Leonard Williams earlier this offseason. Simply put, splurging for another pass-rusher, and a far more specialized one at that, wasn’t very realistic.
