ESPN pundit Craig Burley suggests that Mauricio Pochettino may soon need to drop Thiago Silva from the Chelsea starting line-up.
That is according to ESPN pundit Craig Burley.
Thiago Silva, who’s now 39, has played every single minute of the Premier League season so far.
The veteran defender has been a nailed-on starter since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival in the summer as head coach.
How much longer can the Brazilian centre-back keep going for at this level, though?
Craig Burley suggests change
Burley thinks that sooner or later Silva’s spot in the Chelsea line-up has to come into question.
He thinks that the £110,000-a-week defender (Spotrac) is beginning to allow more errors creep into his game.
“He’s (Pochettino) going to have to look at Thiago Silva at some point because the mistakes are creeping in as he gets older. He’s going to be 40 in his next birthday,” Burley told ESPN.
Mauricio Pochettino may need to drop Thiago Silva
We’re not sure that Silva is the root of the problem right now in the Chelsea XI. In fact, he’s still one of the top individuals when he’s playing well this campaign.
You can’t hide from the fact that he’s in his late thirties and in the final year of his contract, though.
Speaking via ESPN this week, Steve Nicol explained how Silva is a problem in the Blues team right now and his levels are dropping.
Now into his fourth season at Stamford Bridge, Silva continues to defy logic with top-class performance. It means writing him off at any stage is dangerous.
Let’s wait and see how long this modern great of the game has in Chelsea colours.
