Former champion included in Kelly Olynyk-Raptors trade could be Boston Celtics buyout target

A former NBA Champion with the 2021-22 Golden State Warriors who was included in the Kelly Olynyk-Toronto Raptors trade deadline deal — one that also saw Kira Lewis Jr. and a 2024 first-round pick sent to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji –, Otto Porter Jr., could be a Boston Celtics buyout target according to MassLive’s Brian Robb.

“One name to keep an eye on it Otto Porter Jr. from the Celtics perspective since he was a rumored trade target earlier this week,” Robb wrote. “The Jazz could elect to reach a buyout with him if he isn’t moved to another team before the deadline, which would make him a candidate for Boston’s open roster spot.”

Porter was previously seen as a less-than-desirable trade candidate before the deadline by NESN’s Gio Rivera.

“There is an ongoing concern regarding Porter’s health that makes him a less-than-desirable candidate for Boston,” Rivera prefaced before saying, “Porter has played 30 or fewer games in the last three seasons. With the Celtics having been linked to names like Kelly Olynyk and Andre Drummond, Porter is the least suitable option. Boston needs reliability, not just a veteran spokesperson to chat with Payton Pritchard or Neemias Queta.”

You see, if the Celtics were to land a former champion veteran spokesperson to chat with Payton Pritchard and Neemias Queta, doing so for the veteran’s minimum would then be desirable. Giving up assets for Porter is a totally different topic altogether.

Porter knows what it takes to win a championship, and he also knows what it’s like to go from an underperforming rookie to a prominent role player and back to being a reserve. He’s been there and done that, and it’s possible his perspective can help the young Cs when the going gets tough.

Trading for him would’ve been a bad move. Signing him for peanuts is anything but.
