Giants put J.D. Davis on waivers amid $54 million Matt Chapman signing

J.D. Davis’ tenure in San Francisco could soon be over.

The Giants put the third baseman on waivers on Saturday, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.

Last week, the Giants landed third baseman Matt Chapman on a three-year, $54 million deal, which put Davis’ roster spot in peril.

Heyman reported that the Giants had a tough time finding a taker in a potential trade for Davis, who seemingly had no spot in the starting lineup after the team added Chapman and slugger Jorge Soler.

New San Francisco Giants baseball team infielder Matt Chapman answers a question during an introductory news conference announcing his signing Monday, March 4, 2024, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Matt Chapman signed a three-year, $54 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Davis, the ex-Mets infielder, told reporters that he did not find out about the Chapman deal ahead of time and did not hear about it until he walked out of watching “Dune: Part 2.”

A day later, the 30-year-old said he wasn’t sure what San Francisco had in mind for him.

“I don’t know what the game plan is,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “And I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth.”

Davis spent four years in New York and amassed an .815 OPS, though he struggled in 2022 (.238/.324/.359 slash line in 66 games) before he was dealt to San Francisco as part of a four-player package for Darin Ruf.

He immediately thrived with the Giants, slugging eight home runs and 16 total extra-base hits over the final 49 games of 2022.

When he came back to Citi Field last year, Davis cited a lot of turnover in the front office and in the manager spot as to why things didn’t go as planned for him in New York.

“With so many moving parts and so much instability,” Davis said, “it wasn’t only me, there were a lot of guys in the clubhouse that felt like they were in survival mode.”

His first full season with the Giants last year saw him come back down more to earth with a 103 OPS+, which is just a smidge above league average.

Heyman added that the Blue Jays, the team Chapman departed, could make sense for Davis.
