Joe Schoen is yet to bring in a bank-breaking, world-class acquisition via free agency in his first two years as general manager. Rather, Schoen has opted to continue building through the draft and rewarding New York Giants players for their performance via extensions.
However, sitting at around $38 million in salary cap space and having an easy path through contract restructuring to get that number up substantially, could we see that fact change this offseason? With plenty of big names free to sign with new teams soon, we expect Schoen to be busy, especially in targeting offensive lineman. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan thinks that will be the case, and he has his eyes on guard Robert Hunt.

Among the primary names to monitor: Robert Hunt, Jonah Jackson and Mike Onwenu. Signing any of them will be costly, with Hunt’s contract potentially topping out near $16 million per year.”

Many fans consider Hunt a potential splash acquisition for Big Blue. After another great season playing guard for the Miami Dolphins, having a veteran of Hunt’s stature in the locker room could only benefit the young crew the G-Men currently have. We’re of course going to monitor Jonah Jackson and Mike Onwenu too, as Raanan also mentioned them in his piece.
With that said, players like Hunt don’t come cheap. Schoen will have to decide who he will give a big payday to this offseason. Early reports suggest Hunt will command over $16 million annually in a long-term deal. That’s big-time money, especially for a position like guard.
Ultimately, the Giants’ goal this offseason is to create a roster that can compete and allow Daniel Jones to show his true colors next season. With injuries derailing another campaign for Jones in 2023, it’s about time the guy at the helm gets the protection he deserves. It will be fun watching Schoen work his magic come free agency – look for the Giants to be active early and often in acquiring talent like Hunt.
