Man City transfer spending rules could change as PL meeting begins

The latest Manchester City news as a meeting between the Premier League clubs is taking place this week where discussions of potential new FFP rules will happen.

Manchester City will be involved in a two-day meeting between all of the Premier League clubs which could start the ball rolling on potential new spending rules.

All 20 clubs are reported to be in discussions over changes to the current Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) to bring the regulations more in line with UEFA’s new measures. The PSRs are one of the reasons there was such a quiet January transfer window last month.

The rule limits clubs to losses of £105 million over a three-year cycle. Everton and Nottingham Forest have been charged with allegedly breaching the rules, with the Toffees handed a 10-point deduction as punishment.

City have also been charged with alleged breaches of league regulations, with the club accused of misrepresenting their finances. The club vehemently denies any suggestion that they have not adhered to competition rules.

The i newspaper reports that the potential new regulations will be implemented across all four English league divisions. It will see clubs who have qualified for European competitions limited to spending 85 percent of their revenue on player wages and transfer fees, which will reduce to 70 percent for clubs competing in Europe, in line with the UEFA regulations.

It is added that while there will not be a vote during this week’s meeting beginning on Tuesday, it is possible that the new rules – if passed – could be introduced in time for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Their involvement in European competitions, most likely the Champions League, would see City fall into the category where their spending on fees and wages would be limited to 70 percent of their revenue. It is still not clear how a transfer cost will be calculated, although it’s likely that it will be the transfer fee spread out over the duration of a player’s contract.

It’s still to be seen if the proposal will go any further than discussions, clubs will have to agree to any changes before they come in. But it seems that City’s spending strategy in the summer could be impacted by the introduction of any new rules and regulations.
