Erik ten Hag backs Marcus Rashford to rediscover form

While Erik ten Hag will be happy to simply get to January as manager of Manchester United, plans are in place for what’s set to be a crucial month at Old Trafford.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion deal to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the club on the verge of completion, the January transfer window offers Ten Hag the chance to bring in reinforcements – even though the Dutchman has admitted that making any signings is “unlikely.” What’s more immediate is the Red Devils’ next Premier League game at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, as United will be hoping to build on Tuesday’s much-needed 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

Here’s a round-up of the latest news from Old Trafford.

United learn asking price for Valencia wonderkid

Manchester United will have to cough up £34million in order to beat Juventus to the signing of Valencia hotshot Javi Guerra. The Spanish midfielder, not to be confused with the now-retired former Cardiff City player of the same name, has set the Mestalla alight this season at the tender age of 20.

After Italian giants Juventus submitted a bid worth £22m, Valencia responded by demanding a far greater fee, according to Estadio Deportivo, via Football Espana. With Guerra having been capped six times by Spain’s under-21 side, Valencia are in no rush to sell him and could even hold out for the wonderkid’s eye-watering £86m release clause should his stock rise even higher over the course of this season.

Ten Hag throws gauntlet down to Rashford

Erik ten Hag has challenged Marcus Rashford to win back his place in the Manchester United starting XI after dropping him against Chelsea. Following his dismal display at Newcastle, Ten Hag was ruthless with the England international, limiting him to a late cameo during Tuesday’s 2-1 win.

“Rashford is an incredible, good player,” Ten Hag explained ahead of the Bournemouth visit. “You can’t do it with 11 players, he can’t play every game, he’s not in this moment in the form he was last year but I am sure he will get there. What I said about Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – up to them. The team will always line themselves up and the best players who form the best team will play.”

United and City eye Lille prodigy

Manchester United are on course for another transfer tug-of-war, this time with bitter rivals Manchester City. According to French outlet le10sport, both Mancunian clubs have made a ‘very concrete move’ to sign teenager defender Leny Yoro from Lille.

Yoro, who only turned 18 last month, has enjoyed a brilliant breakout campaign and Lille are keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2025. The right-footed centre-back has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances this season and chipped in with two goals.
