Mauricio Pochettino must now start rarely seen Chelsea 21-year-old vs Manchester United on Wednesday

Conor Gallagher won’t be available…

Mauricio Pochettino will again be scratching his head ahead of selecting his team for the next Premier League game against Manchester United.

Before the 3-2 win over Brighton, he was forced to significantly change up his defence after Marc Cucurella and Reece James both picked up suspensions.

Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill were the ones who came in, with the Blues essentially starting four natural centre-backs in defence.

Before Wednesday’s game, it will now be a case of deciding who will feature in midfield following another suspension.

Conor Gallagher’s first half red card threw his teammates under the bus yesterday, however they showed a grit and determination that had not been on show when the similar situation occurred the week before.

The England international had started every single game in the league so far this season, and donned the armband again yesterday.

Maatsen should start after Gallagher red card

With Cole Palmer perhaps more likely to return to the side in place of Mykhailo Mudryk, there will be a space in midfield up for the running.

Pochettino should look to a player who is actually yet to start a league game this season.

Ian Maatsen has proven his versatility in numerous appearances off the bench this season, however it is yet to result in a start.

The manager does not seem as if he wants to play him in his stereotypical position of left-back, given that a clear option to play there did not emerge elsewhere yesterday.

However, he has shown in his brief showings in midfield that he is more than competent in there, and he could be the perfect player to play ahead of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentine will be full of confidence after finding the net for the first and second time in a Chelsea shirt yesterday.
