ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper released his second mock 2024 NFL Draft and there were some changes for the University of Texas. There were also new players that he selected for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.
In his first mock draft, the only Longhorn taken in the first round was wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who went 28th overall to the Buffalo Bills. In the newest mock draft, Kiper had defensive tackle Byron Murphy II going 13th overall to the Las Vegas Raiders.
“Murphy has the highest pass-rush upside of any of the interior defensive linemen in this class,” Kiper wrote. “At 308 pounds, he could play as the Raiders’ 3-technique tackle, wreaking havoc in both the run and pass games.”
Wide receiver Xavier Worthy was taken 32nd overall by the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the mock draft.
“The one problem with this fit is that Worthy had his share of drops in 2022,” Kiper said. “He cut those in half last season [from 10 to 5]. Most of those were concentration drops. I can see why Chiefs fans might worry about a speedy playmaker who has problems holding on to the ball, but Worthy showed last season that he’s past the issue.”
Murphy II, Worthy and Mitchell are three of 11 Texas Longhorns who are at the NFL Combine this week. Defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat is the other Texas player with real first-round potential.
The Cowboys selected Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan in Kiper’s first mock draft, but Kiper went with Georgia tackle Armarius Mims in the 2.0 version. He noted that the 6-foot-7, 340-pounder had only eight starts in his college career, but allowed zero sacks in that time.
“To make room for Mims, the Cowboys could part ways with longtime left tackle Tyron Smith, who’s a free agent, or have him compete with Terence Steele on the right side,” Kiper said. “He played right tackle in college but has the talent to play both sides.”
Smith is a two-time first-team All-Pro and has made the second team twice, but hasn’t played a full season since 2015. Both the Cowboys and Smith expressed a desire for Smith to re-sign with the team, but even if he stays he could replace Steele, who was inconsistent last season.
Jer’Zhan Newton had 7.5 sacks this past season at the defensive tackle spot, and was Kiper’s choice for the Houston Texans at 24th overall. Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton was the pick in the newest version.
“[The] 6-7, 327-pound Guyton is physically what NFL teams want in a future Pro Bowl-caliber right tackle. He moves like a tight end (he used to play there). He has a ton of natural talent, although he doesn’t have as much experience as the tackles likely to be taken ahead of him. For a team that ranked 29th in yards per rush attempt on offense (3.7) last season, Guyton could be an excellent addition.”
Guyton allowed no sacks to lefty quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s blind side this season.
