Mourinho told Glazers flop signing was ‘not good enough’ – and he’s still there

Manchester United would’ve done well to heed Jose Mourinho’s advice during his time in charge, with the Glazers’ decision costing them millions of pounds

Jose Mourinho tried selling Manchester United flop Anthony Martial but was blocked by the Glazers, according to reports.

Martial, 28, is finally set to leave Old Trafford this summer after nine mostly lacklustre years with the Red Devils. Despite showing flashes of his ability, the French striker has struggled for consistency due to several injury issues.

He arrived in a transfer deal worth up to £61.5million, but will now walk away for nothing – which Mourinho envisioned during his time in charge. A former United player told ESPN the Special One wanted to sell Martial after the 2018 World Cup.

Mourinho thought it best to cash in on him while his transfer value was holding well. But the Glazers supposedly didn’t want to let him go because they liked him.

“Jose told Ed and the Glazers that he wanted to get rid of Anthony Martial, that he was neither good enough nor reliable enough,” the ex-United star recalled. “That was vetoed by the Glazers – Joel was a big fan of Martial [as a player].”

It sums up the failed transfer strategy under the American owners’ reign, which fans are hopeful will change now Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos team are taking over football operations after his 25% minority takeover.

Martial has previously criticised Mourinho’s treatment of him, saying in 2022: “He was talking about me in the press, little phrases, a bit like he had done with Karim Benzema at Real Madrid.

“He likes these games, but he also knows who he is doing it with. He knows that I am 20 years old then and that if I say something, it is I who will be the young person who lacks respect.

“So I said nothing, it was useless. The second season, I was the team’s top scorer in the first part of the season, he brought in Alexis Sanchez and I hardly played anymore. It’s the season of the World Cup and it cost me dearly, especially since the France team won. I should have been there.”
