New York Jets Planning Trade For Major Quarterback?

Could the New York Jets be eyeing a massive offseason move for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields this offseason? NFL insider Benjamin Allbright seems to think so.

Responding to a query about Fields’ status, Allbright mentioned hearing a rumor that the Jets might explore a trade for Fields, considering him as a backup for Aaron Rodgers in 2024. It would be a strange move, but allowing Fields to learn behind Rodgers could be an ideal situation for the young signal caller.

Justin Fields, Chicago Bears, New York Jets

With the Bears expected to trade Fields after this season, holding the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft courtesy of the Carolina Panthers, speculation has come up about potential suitors. Some suggest the Las Vegas Raiders could be interested in making a deal for the Ohio State product.

Surprisingly, the New York Jets have been thrown in the mix after Allbright’s report.

The New York Jets Could Be A Justin Fields Suitor
However, the idea of the Jets pursuing Fields raises questions. The Bears are unlikely to part with Fields without substantial compensation, possibly seeking a third-round pick or more. Considering Rodgers’ age (40) and in the back half of his two-year deal with the Jets, investing in a backup quarterback might not align with New York’s current timeline for contention.

Fields, now in his third NFL season, showcased his skills in a Week 17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, going 20-for-32 with 268 yards and a touchdown. Despite some impressive performances, Fields has faced inconsistency during his tenure with the Bears, holding a 10-27 record as a starter.

If he reaches his full potential, there is no question that he could become a legitimate superstar. His dual-threat ability is among the most dangerous in the NFL. However, consistent is key when it comes to an NFL starting quarterback.

While the New York Jets could benefit from a stronger backup for Rodgers, it appears unlikely that they would sacrifice significant assets in a trade for one. Justin Fields may not be the ideal solution in this scenario. But, it sounds like it’s something to keep an eye on.
