FRISCO – It is surely the position of the San Francisco 49ers that due to injury they have a need at defensive tackle.

It is apparently the position of the Dallas Cowboys that their needs at the same spot … not so much.

Sebastian Joseph-Day, who was waived by the Chargers at the end of last week, is signing with the Cowboys’ rivals in San Francisco, bringing to that lineup some run-stopping talent, some upfield QB-harassing talent and some Super Bowl experience.

The Niners have in recent weeks dealth with some injury issues with D-linemen Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead … and so adding veteran depth makes sense.

But Cowboys critics will surely wonder why Dallas – with Johnathan Hankins (ankle) still out and with rookie first-rounder Mazi Smith now being hurried into action – hasn’t successfully made a similar move.

Joseph-Day played in all 14 games for the Chargers this season, registering a career-best three sacks and a career-best 11 quarterback hits. He was seemingly released for cap reasons as he is playing on a three-year, $24 million contract signed with the Chargers in 2022 after having won a Super Bowl with the Rams the season before.
