NY Jets news: Aaron Rodgers’ future revealed, Tim Boyle is back, Jets sign a RB

NY Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers officially put to bed any conversation that he might return this season during his weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday.

Rodgers insinuated that, while he likely would have pushed to play this week if the Jets were still in playoff contention, the fact that his team is eliminated from the postseason and that he’s not 100 percent are reasons why he likely won’t be back in 2023.

Rodgers did, however, indicate that he doesn’t expect 2024 to be his final NFL season. When Rodgers first joined the Jets this past offseason, he made it clear that he planned to play at least two seasons with his new team.

Given that the 2023 season was essentially a wash, it appears as though Rodgers fully intends to keep his promise and play through 2025 with the Jets. A lot can change between now and then, but Rodgers doesn’t expect to be one-and-done in New York.

Tim Boyle is back in the NFL

The Jets released veteran quarterback Tim Boyle earlier this month after he made two starts for the team following Zach Wilson’s benching. Just a few weeks later, Boyle is back in the NFL.

The Houston Texans signed Boyle to their practice squad on Tuesday after the team failed to claim Nathan Rourke on waivers. Boyle joins a Texans team that’s looking for quarterback depth with rookie C.J. Stroud still out nursing a concussion.

In two starts with the Jets in 2023, Boyle threw just one touchdown and four interceptions. Given his abysmal college numbers and less-than-stellar NFL stats, it’s anyone’s guess as to how Boyle continues to receive these opportunities.

Whatever the case, Boyle is back with another NFL team. The unlikely football journey of Tim Boyle continues.

Jets sign a practice squad running back

The Jets made a host of roster moves on Tuesday, highlighted by defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson being added to the injured reserve. Jefferson’s 2023 season is over after the veteran defensive lineman suffered a hip injury in Sunday’s game.

The Jets signed defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes, who was also injured on Sunday, to the active roster to take his place. The team also added a pair of players to their practice squad, including former Florida State running back Jacques Patrick.

A former highly-ranked recruit, Patrick spent time in the XFL in 2020 and 2023 and also appeared in two games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. He most recently spent time on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad this season.

The Jets also signed defensive lineman Manny Jones to their practice squad. A former undrafted free agent out of Colorado State, Jones appeared in four games with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022.
