Rain spoils Marsh farewell as Australian great bows out

Bad weather caused the final game of the BBL|13 regular season between the Thunder and Renegades to be abandoned

The professional cricket career of former Australian Test batter Shaun Marsh has ended in a washout that also condemned the Sydney Thunder to the KFC BBL|13 wooden spoon.

Marsh was due to sign off with his Melbourne Renegades side on Wednesday but relentless rain in the harbour city meant play was unable to go ahead at the Sydney Showground.

Both sides picked up a point for the abandonment, but it was not enough for the Thunder to avoid finishing bottom of the pile after claiming just one win all season.

Play was due to start at 7.15pm AEDT but the toss was pushed back before umpires and ground staff met to determine the game couldn’t go ahead at 8.30pm.

The washout brings an end to Marsh’s 24-year career, which included 38 Tests, 73 ODIs and 15 T20Is.

Earlier in the evening, the 40-year-old spoke of knowing the time was right to call it quits.

“It’s a little bit disappointing, but you can’t control the weather,” Marsh told Fox Cricket.

“I’ve enjoyed playing in the Big Bash and it’s been a lot of fun.

“I probably knew at the start of the year this would be my last year, I’ve loved every minute of it but it’s time to hang them up.

“When I first started playing, if you’d told me I’d be playing at 40 (years old) I’d have laughed at you.”

The Renegades finished the regular season one spot above the Thunder with two wins.

The BBL|13 finals get underway on Friday with Brisbane Heat hosting the Sydney Sixers on the Gold Coast in the Qualifier before Perth Scorchers host the Adelaide Strikers in the Knockout the following afternoon.
