Red Sox ‘Still Have Big Move In Them’ With Marquee Free Agents Still Available

The Boston Red Sox fanbase entered the offseason with high hopes and has been met with nothing but disappointment with just a few weeks to go before spring training gets underway.

The ownership group has never had a lower reputation in Boston and Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow already is under fire from fans and media alike — fair or not.

Fortunately, the incredibly slow offseason could benefit the Red Sox, as there still are plenty of impact free agents on the board. At least one well-informed media member is expecting a splash after months of inactivity despite claims of a lower payroll during Winter Weekend.

“I think the Red Sox still have a big move in them,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman said Wednesday while appearing on a Bleacher Report live stream.

Heyman went on to list Boston as a potential suitor for Blake Snell and noted that if Jordan Montgomery does not end up with the Texas Rangers, the Red Sox would be the next most likely landing spot.

After hitting on a few other notes around the league, Heyman gave one more impassioned and optimistic take on the Red Sox situation.

“(Boston) finished last three of the last for years,” Heyman said. “Again, I’m going to say it, I got to think the Red Sox are going to be in the mix on somebody big. We know we’ve connected them to Montgomery. Could it be Snell? We shall see but I do feel like the Red Sox are going to do more.”

The other impact free agent of note that is seen as a fit for Boston is outfielder/designated hitter Jorge Soler — who Heyman predicted would land with either the Toronto Blue Jays or Arizona Diamondbacks but did mention the Red Sox as well.

There are some notable players sitting in free agency with time running out. After facing the heat at Winter Weekend from fans, there remains some hope that Breslow can find a way to appease both ownership and those in the Fenway Park stands.
