The Baltimore Ravens have bid farewell to a few defensive coaches over the past month. Among them, Mike Macdonald left his role as Ravens defensive coordinator to fill the Seattle Seahawks’ head coaching vacancy.
Macdonald interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs, but he ultimately agreed to become the ninth head coach in Seahawks franchise history.
Macdonald closely worked with Ravens head coach John Harbaugh for much of the last 10 years. Harbaugh is confident that the defensive-minded coach will make the most out of his upcoming run with the Seahawks.
“I think Mike will do great,” Harbaugh said during a press conference at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. “Mike’s great. A couple of years ago, everybody was like, ‘Why Mike Macdonald?’ So, now I can go, ‘Well, that’s why.’ You saw it.
“He’s a great guy, he’s a great coach. He’s very diligent. Yes, he’s smart, he’s thoughtful, but he’s fundamentally grounded, and he’s very diligent. Every single day, all he thinks about is ways to help the guys be as good as they can be or attack the offense that he’s going against.”
The Ravens promoted Zach Orr to defensive coordinator earlier this month. The expectations sure will be quite high for Orr in the 2024 season, especially as he will anchor a defense that ranked in the top five in multiple team stats, including points per game allowed (16.5).
