Since The Bachelor season 28 began, there’s been speculation about why the whites of leading man Joey Graziadei’s eyes sometimes appear to be yellow, and he now explains that he has Gilbert Syndrome. Joey, a 28-year-old tennis pro from Collegeville, Pennsylvania got his start as the runner-up on Charity Lawson’s Bachelorette season. Although he was heartbroken when she broke up with him, he later happily accepted the role of the Bachelor in order to continue his journey to find the love of his life.

In a February 29 Instagram post, The Bachelor season 28 leading man Joey said that he wanted to talk about something that he is “seeing a lot of comments about, which is ‘Joey’s yellow eyes.'”

Joey shared that, when he was in high school, he was diagnosed with Gilbert Syndrome, which affects the whites of his eyes, and makes them “have those jaundice levels, which is why they look a little bit more yellow.” He said that he has to pay attention to drinking more fluids. Joey explained, “It is worse when I have stress or lack of sleep, which happens on a TV show.”

Joey Graziadei’s Health Journey Explained

Joey explained that, when he was in high school, he was sick for about a week and a half, so his mom thought that it would be a good idea for him to go to the doctor. Joey had bloodwork done that showed that his bilirubin count was very high, which could mean that there was something wrong with his liver. He had a liver ultrasound and went to other doctors. They determined that “there was nothing that was necessarily wrong like hepatitis,” but they diagnosed him with Gilbert Sydrome.

Joey assured his fans that he’s been told that he’s healthy. He added that it’s something that he wants pay attention to more going into this year. Joey appreciated everyone looking out for him and wondering if he was okay. Although Joey didn’t owe his fans an explanation, it was very nice that he not only paid attention to their concerns, but also addressed why the whites of his eyes sometimes appear to be yellow. It’s always a good thing when someone with a platform as big as Joey’s can raise awareness about any sort of health issue.

As Joey heads into his hometown dates, hopefully some of the stress that he referenced in his post will begin to be alleviated as he gains clarity about which woman he’ll propose to. He has narrowed down his original group of 32 women to just four: Kelsey Anderson, Daisy Kent, Rachel Nance, and Maria Georgas. Hopefully, Joey found the love of his life and his potential wife among these women, and he’ll have a happy and healthy future with her.

The Bachelor season 28 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
