Summary

  • Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV surpassed The Last of Us in viewership, revealing disturbing truths about behind-the-scenes scandals.
  • Featuring stars like Drake Bell and Alexa Nikolas, the documentary sheds light on child actors’ struggles and abuse in Nickelodeon shows.
  • Quiet on Set highlights the dark side of beloved TV shows.

In 2023, The Last of Us broke records with the highest ever debut on Max. However, it seems that the horrors of a video game-based apocalypse are no match for the disturbing truth shared in the new documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV , which has smashed through the Pedro Pascal-led series record of 1.2 billion watched minutes to claim the top-spot. Despite also airing on television, like The Last of UsQuiet on Set managed to rack up 1.3 billion watched minutes during the week of March 18-24.

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV gained a lot of publicity around the time of its premiere on March 17 thanks to the revelations made in the series that focuses on telling an often disturbing account of behind-the-scenes scandals and incidents that mostly took place during the tenure of Dan Schneider as producer and showrunner at Nickelodeon. The documentary features several stars who appeared on Nickelodeon shows during the 1990s and early 2000s, such as Alexa Nikolas of Zoey 101 fame, and Drake and Josh star Drake Bell, who spoke about being sexually abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck in the documentary.

The series opened up many debates on social media about the treatment of child actors and the toll fame took on many of their lives, as well as laying bare the hidden abuse scandals and intolerable working conditions that some had to endure during their time as the stars of Nickelodeon shows. Following the release of the first two episodes on March 17, the third and fourth episodes landed the following day, with the final fifth episode debuting on April 7.

Quiet on Set’s Viewership Could Not Match a Netflix Sci-Fi Juggernaut

Although the public interest in Quiet on Set was enough to propel it to the top of Max’s viewership chart, the documentary was pushed back into third spot on the overall chart released by Nielsen for that week. The top two spots were taken by Netflix’s adaptation of 3 Body Problem and Prime Video’s Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Road House remake, which pulled in 1.4 billion and just over 1.3 billion minutes, respectively.

On the other side of Quiet on Set, Disney+ secured fourth place on the list with Bluey at 1.04 billion minutes, and Netflix completed the top 5 with Homocide: New York landing at 1.03 billion minutes.

While The Last of Us will most likely regain its crown as Max’s biggest show when Season 2 finally debuts, Quiet on Set’s figures are nonetheless impressive. Once again, it is a sign that viewers are drawn to stories that uncover a darker side of much loved TV shows and the scandals that are not common knowledge as the smiling faces depicted on screen in reruns and streaming debuts of older TV shows. Whether the series continues to appear in the chart will be revealed in the coming weeks.
