The Last of Us Season 2 Release Window Reportedly Revealed

According to trusted insider Daniel Richtman (ComicBook.com), the second season of the award-winning The Last of Us will premiere in either March or April 2025. However, it is worth noting that while Richtman has proven to be a reliable source in the past, readers should still take this news with a grain of salt until it is officially confirmed by HBO. The Last of Us Season 2 began production in February 2024 in British Columbia, Canada under the working title “Mega Sword.” Filming is expected to wrap by the end of August.

Is Pedro Pascal’s Joel Dying in Season 2?

Richtman also mentioned that Pedro Pascal (Joel) has already finished filming on The Last of Us Season 2 and is now preparing for Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four shoot. With filming expected to last another five months, it seems likely that Season 2 will adapt Joel’s controversial death scene from the video game The Last of Us Part II. While some fans thought the HBO adaptation might keep Pascal’s Joel alive given the actor’s popularity, this doesn’t seem to be the case. Furthermore, earlier this month, it was reported that The Last of Us had rented a property near Mission, British Columbia that looked awfully similar to the location in Part II where Joel died.

Similar to The Last of Us Part II, the upcoming second season will give Bella Ramsey’s Ellie a larger role, while also giving her several new allies and enemies. Among the new additions are Isabela Merced as Dina, the close friend, and later girlfriend, of Ellie; Young Mazino as Jesse, the ex-boyfriend of Dina and father of their son, JJ; and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, who killed Joel by smashing his head with a golf club in Part II.

The Last of Us Has Been a Huge Success for HBO

The Last of Us premiered on HBO in January 2023. Taking place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, the series follows Joel, a hardened survivor, as he smuggles Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The Last of Us was an instant success for HBO, marking the network’s second-largest debut after House of the Dragon. Viewership continued to increase throughout the show’s first season, culminating in a 75 percent increase in the Season 1 finale audience.

The show was also a hit with critics and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. At the latter’s 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, The Last of Us was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, among others.
