The 2024 NFL Draft starts on April 25 in Detroit with the 32 first-round picks. In the 88 NFL drafts, teams have chosen 128 prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges in the first round, and another 29 who were not first-rounders but were selected in the first 32 picks. AL.com is counting down to the draft by highlighting the players with Alabama football roots who have been chosen in the first 32 picks.
Guard Ben Grubbs is the only player picked from Auburn in the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, who, on the other hand, have drafted 12 players from Alabama.
The Ravens took Grubbs with the 29th selection in the 2007 draft. Grubbs is the most recent of the five players from Alabama high schools and colleges chosen at No. 29 in an NFL Draft, and all became NFL starters:
· Running back Joe Cribbs (Sulligent, Auburn): 1980 by the Buffalo Bills. Cribbs was an immediate hit in Buffalo, with 1,000-yard rushing performances in three of his first four seasons, and in the non-1,000-yard season, he led the NFL with an average of 90.4 rushing yards per game in the strike-shortened 1982 campaign. Cribbs jumped to the Birmingham Stallions of the original USFL and delivered 2,514 rushing yards in the 1984 and 1985 seasons before immediately returning to the NFL for four more seasons when the spring league went under. With 5,356 NFL rushing yards, Cribbs has the most among the 45 running backs drafted in 1980, including the five picked before him – Billy Sims, Curtis Dickey, Earl Cooper, Vagas Ferguson and Charles White.
· Nose tackle Doug Smith (Auburn): 1984 by the Houston Oilers. Smith played 101 regular-season games and eight playoff contests in the Houston defensive line.
· Guard Ed King (Phenix City, Auburn): 1991 by the Cleveland Browns. King went right into Cleveland’s lineup at right guard. But in King’s third season, the Browns moved him to tackle, and it didn’t work out as well. In 1996, though, he had one more season as an NFL regular as the New Orleans Saints’ right guard.
· Safety George Teague (Jeff Davis, Alabama): 1993 by the Green Bay Packers. Teague played in 133 regular-season games and 12 postseason contests across nine NFL campaigns. He averaged 28.6 yards per return on his 18 NFL interceptions. He returned four for touchdowns, including two in the playoffs.
· Guard Ben Grubbs (Elmore County, Auburn): 2007 by the Baltimore Ravens. Grubbs was a starting guard across nine NFL seasons until a neck injury brought his career to a premature end in 2015. He was a Pro Bowler for the Ravens in 2011 and for the Saints in 2013.
Three of the No. 29 picks were not first-round selections. Cribbs and Smith were the first picks of the second round, and King was the second pick of the second round.
The Detroit Lions hold the 29th selection in this year’s draft.
